If you’ve never been camping before, you may be feeling a bit of trepidation about braving the outdoors. Let our team at AdventureQuest RV Rentals be the first to reassure you: You can do this! And it will be well worth it. However, to make you feel a bit more comfortable as a first-timer, we’ve put together this list of tips for individuals who are new to the camping world.
1. Try before you buy.
Many new campers make the mistake of buying a bunch of gear right before their trip. We recommend that you try to rent or borrow as much gear as possible for your first time out. As you camp more, you will get a better feel for what works for you. So we hate for you to purchase a bunch of equipment that you may or may not use more than once.
2. Do a test run.
Before you brave the Great Smoky Mountains or Pisgah National Forest, do a trial camp out in your backyard or an overnight trip at a nearby campground. That way, you can get familiar with setting things up, sleeping outdoors, and using your camping equipment. If you have kids, this is a great way to help them get acclimated to all the nature sounds and to work out any anxiety they might feel about sleeping outside.
3. Start with an RV.
A tent is certainly an affordable way to camp, but unless you know you’re an outdoorsman through and through, you may be biting off more than you want your first time out. We recommend that you rent an RV and take a few of the comforts of home with you instead of having to “rough it” one hundred percent.
4. Book your campsite in advance.
Many state parks and campgrounds offer walk-in reservations. However, these spots can fill up fast, and you don’t want to show up ready to set up your motorhome rental only to find the campground at full capacity. We recommend that you reserve your campsites in advance, and then make your camper reservations accordingly.
5. Do your research.
You don’t need to plan out every moment of your trip, but when you camp, you want to be sure to create a thorough list of what to bring as well as what you can do in the area. You can get information when you get there, too, but it’s good to at least have a rough idea of what you want to do so you can pack clothes and equipment accordingly.
